The family of a man accused of raping a newborn baby are supporting him.

The 25-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the baby’s identity, is charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and sexual assault of a 12-day-old infant.

Police have said the address he would be living at was his father’s who is an alcoholic and would not be able to keep an eye on him.

The baby was left needing treatment in intensive care at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children following the sickening attack.

The nonce denies the charges but accepted he had sole custody of the baby on the night when injuries to the child are said to have occurred.

He was remanded back into custody at Maghaberry Prison until December 5.
